Minneapolis Neighborhoods

IPR has found six parts of the metro area of which we feel comfortable referring our students to search for apartments and housing. Five are located in the heart of Minneapolis: Downtown, Loring Park, ‘the U’, St. Anthony and Uptown. The other area represented is the Hiawatha Corridor, about 5 miles away from IPR.

The downtown neighborhood is the core of Minneapolis. While it is home to a large percentage of the office buildings in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, downtown also has scattered apartment buildings tucked away in a few different areas. The area is also saturated with music venues, a theater district, coffee shops and restaurants. IPR is located in the Warehouse District portion of downtown, so the walk to school from these buildings is usually short. You can also walk to almost anything you need when living downtown and have access to the expansive skyway system.

Loring Park is across from the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. It’s home to a series of bike and walking paths that wind around the lake and gardens. It is an urban residential area, and is home to important institutions and buildings such as the Basilica of Saint Mary and The Walker Art Center. There are many restaurants and cafés located within walking distance of the apartment buildings.

The University of Minnesota also known as The U of M or “the U” has over forty-thousand undergrads and covers a huge area in Minneapolis. The U is bustling with student life and is only a few miles away from IPR. This area offers a wide assortment of places that cater to students, including restaurants, shops and entertainment. It is a nice transition for someone hesitant to live in the city, as it has more of a collegiate atmosphere. This sometimes makes students feel more at ease and helps parents to be more confident about life in Minneapolis.

St. Anthony is a part of Minneapolis that is located just across the river from IPR. The St. Anthony riverfront is a big attraction in the warm months, offering outdoor music and patio seating at the restaurants, as well as the Stone Arch Art Festival and the Fourth of July celebrations. The apartment buildings in St. Anthony are between the U and Downtown and are less than a mile from grocery and retail stores, restaurants and shops.

Uptown is located just south of Loring Park. It is a very popular place to live among students and young professionals due to its large supply of residential buildings mingled with amenities and entertainment. Grocery stores, banks, restaurants, shopping and nightlife are all close at hand on the Hennepin and Lyndale Avenue corridors. In addition, its close proximity to the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes makes Uptown a destination in the summer months.

The Hiawatha Corridor is becoming an increasingly popular place to live due to its proximity to the Light-Rail Transit line. The area is more laid back than the more centralized neighborhoods, but the train offers easy access to Downtown, the airport and the Mall of America.

Neighborhood Map

When living in an urban area, safety is very important and it helps to be aware of your surroundings. While we feel comfortable referring students to these areas, it never hurts to have as much information as possible. Consider contacting a department of the Minneapolis Police called Community Crime

Prevention/SAFE at 612-673-3015. They can send/fax you a map of current crime incidents in the neighborhood you’re considering.
