IPR’s DIY 360 with Adam Levy

Ben Frost & Tim Hecker

Friday, September 17th

11:30 am

Robinson Hall

“Brutal yet utterly beautiful… full of deep intricacies that won’t let you go.”NME on music of Ben Frost

“Foreboding, abstract pieces in which static and sub-bass rumbles open up around slow moving notes and chords, like fissures in the earth waiting to swallow them whole.”The New York Times on music of Tim Hecker

World-renowned avant garde electronica artists, Ben Frost, (Reykjavic, Iceland) and Tim Hecker (Montreal) will have a conversation with Adam Levy about composing, technology, recording, and experimental music in the 21st Century. This is a HUGE coup for IPR this week and is jointly brought to you by the Southern Theater and The University of MN. School of Journalism.  There are $12 student rush tickets available to IPR and Globe students for the performances at the Southern Theater (see below for show time details).

Ben Frost’s music is about contrast, influenced as much by classical minimalism as by punk rock and metal. Frost has collaborated with Björk, Amiina, Jóhann Jóhannsson and celebrated Bedroom Community label mates Sam Amidon, Nico Muhly and Valgeir Sigurðsson. His newest release, By The Throat, has received rave reviews.

Frost was recently awarded a year of individual mentoring with English musician and composer Brian Eno via the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative 2010-2011. Through an advisory board that recommended the mentors and an expert nominating panel, six talented young artists from around the world were chosen to work alongside six major artists in the fields of dance, film, literature, music, theater and visual arts for a year of intense collaboration.

Tim Hecker is a Canadian-based musician and sound artist, born in Vancouver. Since 1996, he has produced a range of audio works for Kranky, Alien8, Mille Plateaux, Room40, Force Inc, Staalplaat and Fat Cat. His works have been described as “structured ambient”, “tectonic color plates” and “cathedral electronic music.” His Harmony in Ultraviolet received critical acclaim, including being recognized by Pitchfork as a top recording of 2006. Radio Amor was also recognized as a key recording of 2003 by Wire Magazine.. Tim has presented his work in live settings around the world, including performances at Sonar (Barcelona), MUTEK (Montreal), Primavera Sound (Barcelona), Victoriaville (Quebec), Vancouver New Music Festival (Vancouver) and Transmediale (Berlin). He currently resides in Montreal.
