From Punk To Post: Annie Sparrows at DIY 360

Annie Sparrows, local punk rock musician and sound designer came to IPR recently to discuss her music, professional journey, company’s accomplishments as well as some internship opportunities for our students.

Annie began her career in music touring with local pop punk heavies, the Soviettes.  Signed to Billy Joe Armstrong from Green Day’s imprint record label, Annie toured the country with her trio until they “drove each other crazy.”

Brahmstedt White Noise, one of the country’s biggest sound design companies, hired her to do reception and office work.  She quickly established herself as a valuable asset, putting to work management and accounting skills she honed while in her band.

She now sings on ads, composes songs for commercials, does the accounting, manages the musical archive, and does other general management duties at BWN.

She discussed two internship opportunities which they need filled: a composer and an engineer/sound designer.  Both need minimal experience and knowledge.  Students were given contact information.

Annie is also playing in two bands currently; a punk rock bass and drums duo, Awesome Snakes and a 1950’s and 60’s style doo wop girl harmony group called Goddamn Doo Wop Band.

DIY 360 is a weekly event hosted by Adam Levy. The goal is to introduce students to professionals in the field who have been successful, frequently by adapting to changes in the business where they make use of multiple skill sets. Guests share information about their careers, their philosophies about professionalism and their art.  Guests often give advice to budding artists, entertainment business professionals, producers and engineers.  DIY 360 is an opportunity for students to network with those working in the field and with each other as they work toward career success.
