Jim Walsh is a writer and songwriter from Minneapolis. Formerly an editor and columnist for the St. Paul Pioneer Press and City Pages, he now writes a weekly column for the Southwest Journal, and contributes regularly to MinnPost, Minnesota Law & Politics, and the Star Tribune. He is the author of The Replacements: All Over But The Shouting: An Oral History (Voyageur), and has been published in several magazines and newspapers, including Rolling Stone, SPIN, the Village Voice, the L.A. Weekly, and the Utne Reader, and the books Kill Your Idols: A New Generation Of Rock Writers Reconsider The Classics (Barricade, 2005) and Da Capo Best Music Writing 2000 (Da Capo, 2001). Walsh has won several journalism awards, and in 2003 was the recipient of the John S. Knight Professional Journalism Fellowship from Stanford University. His musical alter-ego The Mad Ripple released its debut CD Sink and/or Swim (Eclectone) in 2006 and the follow-up Her Tattoos Could Sail Ships in 2010. He performs semi-regularly in clubs and coffee shops with his band or at The Mad Ripple Hootenanny, a rotating collection of songwriters that launched in 2007.
