Jon Smith

Jon SmithInstructor: Audio for Video

Jonathan has been working in the underground music scene in the Twin Cities since the age of 19, when he returned from Berklee College of Music in 1993. In 1996, he completed a bachelor’s degree in Music Education at the University of Minnesota and spent the rest of the ‘90s playing and recording with many original and cover bands. He has been working as a licensed music educator in Edina, Minneapolis and St. Paul Public Schools for the past 20 years.

In 2002, Jonathan was hired to teach digital music at a small charter high school in Minneapolis. Over a 10-year period, Jon worked alongside IPR DVMP Program Chair Trey Wodele to transform the arts classes at the school into the Digital Media Academy – a high school digital media program that specializes in audio production, video production and graphic design.

While working days teaching digital music and audio production to high school students, he spent his nights writing, recording, producing and playing music for television and film at Echo Boys and Crash & Sue’s.

Jon is also well known for his work recording, producing and performing with a band called Bubblemath. In 2002, Bubblemath’s debut album “Such Fine Particles of the Universe” –  engineered and mixed by Alex Oana – received a Minnesota Music Award for Best Eclectic Album. The band is in the final stages of mixing its eagerly awaited album entitled “Edit Peptide” at SignatureTone Music with Adam Tucker.

In addition to teaching Sound for Video classes at IPR, Jonathan works for St. Paul Public Schools as a technology integration specialist, supporting administration, teachers and staff with the deployment and use of more than 40,000 iPads throughout the district.
