Wednesday February 27th at The Belmore/ New Skyway Lounge was the setting for the 3rd in
stallment of Groove. Groove is an event celebrating all that is hip hop. It brings all aspects of the hip hop culture together, Including music creation, music performance, street art and dance.
The evening started out with a set from Minneapolis artist DJ Blaze One. His infusion of genres blended into a hip hop package was uncanny.
Next up, was a beat battle where students of IPR pitted their
songs against each other in the hopes of taking home the crown. The students who participated included Elgin Thrower a.k.a. They Call Me Bo, Andrew Petersen, John Chavez, and Tyler Meyer a.k.a. TYMY accepted this challenge. All contestants had amazing songs that drove the crowd into a frenzy. In the end, there can be only one winner and that person was, John Chavez a.k.a. John O on Da Track. In addition to the title, John also received a Shure SM58 microphone and IPR jacket.
Unique to Groove 3 was a faculty beat battle and there was an amazing amount of talent present. IPR’s own Andrew Lucas a.k.a. Ronin, Onyx Johnson a.k.a. King Sandman, Paul Znascko a.k.a. DJ Blaze One, Derek Lindzy a.k.a. Dlinz and Joe Sadow
ski a.k.a. “Avey” or Average Joe graced the stage. It was an intense competition with astounding music from all the corners of hip hop. The final round came down to Joe “Avey” Sadowski and Paul “Dj Blaze One” Znascko. The crowd’s cheers said it all. It was a tie! So in the spirit of things, these two warriors came out with two more songs to pit against each other. Wouldn’t you know it, they tie again. For the love of hip hop these two amazing producers chose to share the win.
The Institute of Production and Recording, Joe Sadowski, and Karah Barr would like to thank all that attended. You, the people, made this event a huge success. What a night for Hip Hop.
