Multimedia arts education program set to expand in Minneapolis park system

Posted by admin on Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Pilot program at Powderhorn Park underway

A joint venture agreement with the Institute of Production and Recording (IPR), the Jackie Lee Robinson Foundation (JLRF) and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) sets the stage for expansion of a unique multimedia arts education program in the parks.

Since 2003, IPR has facilitated a recording studio in the Powderhorn Recreation Center that has provided a small number of neighborhood youth access to recording equipment and supervisory staff so they could learn to produce and record music. Although the equipment was basic and technical support limited, the studio became an attraction fueling greater interest in the program.

As a result, IPR/JLRF developed a program to not just enhance the Powderhorn studio, but eventually make recording, production, graphic design and multimedia arts available to community sites throughout Minneapolis. It is envisioned that over the next five years “Ideawerks” studios will be made available to many MPRB recreation centers throughout the park system.

On “Shine,” Martina McBride’s Luster Blazes Brighter Than Ever

Posted by Brianna Rhubee on Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Martina McBride

Shine

RCA Nashville

I grew up in two small towns in Southwest Minnesota – Jeffers (population 400) and Windom (population 4,000) – listening to country music. One of my mom and my all-time favorite artists then (and now) is Martina McBride. To this day I have fond memories of my seven year-old self sitting in the backseat of my mom’s car, belting, “Independence Day” and “A Broken Wing” to the radio.

Oliver Ho: Sign of Tomorrow

Posted by admin on Monday, April 27th, 2009

Any international DJ that plays in Minneapolis for the first time and drops “Sign “☮” the Times ” by Prince into a modern techno set quickly becomes a favorite of mine.  Local event promoters Particle People, (Jesse Jakob and Aaron Bliss) celebrated their one year anniversary by inviting London deejay and music producer, Oliver Ho, to be their guest. Sure enough, I have a new favorite.

As I walked through Gallery 13, admiring colorful oil paintings and striking collages hung on the wall by local artists, I remembered why I enjoy coming to events like this.  Minneapolis has been a favorite spot for many visiting deejays and with the help of several local promoters throughout the years (Hush, Klikmusik, Convergence, Intellephunk) fans have been given a chance to hear a variety of different styles of techno and electronic music.  Watching the colored lights on the  mixer glowing in this dark venue along with the nicely stacked speaker system producing thousands of watts of sound gave the listener the opportunity not only to hear, but to feel the music.  Literally.  And the sounds we heard from veteran producer Oliver Ho that evening gave us a glimpse of the future.

“I always wait to see what the vibe is like, and the atmosphere…I like giving something to people they might not have heard before.”

The advancement of music technology has greatly influenced Oliver’s music.  Being an active Ableton Live user enables him to play very diverse selections of music and to be more in control.  Compared to years past of using DAT, reel to reel machines and outboard gear he currently takes advantage of modern tools to create several styles of music, not just electronic.  “The amazing thing about software is that it has made music very democratic.  Anyone getting into production and using top technology has to have patience and not go too fast. With computers, I like the ability to re-edit music and work on it slowly over a period of time.”

Tracks from his new tech-minimal project, Raudive (pronounced raw-deev), have gotten the attention of other well known artists / deejays, showing up in sets from Daniel Bell to Ricardo Villalobos. Oliver noted, “What was happening a lot in the late nineties was techno music was becoming very narrow minded, so this was a chance for me as an artist and a producer to experiment with different ideas; I thought it was apt to use a different name for that.  It means I can make music inspired by house, experimental, different things..it’s a way for me to be diverse and using a name for that will let people know that there is a change of gear.”

Due in part to the different styles of music Oliver produces, it has worked well for him to collaborate with numerous record labels, such as Blueprint Records, Klang Elektronik and Poker Flat.  Certainly, Oliver has experienced the trials and tribulations of running a record label and found that it can be a difficult task.  His relationships with various labels have afforded him the opportunity to now concentrate solely on his music.  “The biggest challenge of running a label is being on top of it and not allowing people to take advantage of you.  There has to be a balance between making money and making music.”

As I peered over Oliver’s shoulders watching his quick hands mix, equalize and add effects to multiple tracks while he kept a close and engaging bond with the dance floor, I reflected on why I choose to come to these events.  For me its a chance to hear new sounds, have new experiences, and be surrounded by an open minded community of music lovers.  Mission accomplished.

Hip-Hop Essentials at IPR

THE INSTITUTE OF PRODUCTION & RECORDING ANNOUNCES HIP-HOP CLASS AS PERMANENT PART OF CURRICULUM

Ten-Week Course Helps Students Understand the Roots of Rap Culture

The Institute of Production & Recording (IPR) is pleased to announce its Hip-Hop Essentials class is now being offered to its students as a regular elective.  The class helps students develop a further understanding of the business of hip-hop distribution, sales, promotion and marketing.  Running since 2006, the course is now in full swing in conjunction with the highly acclaimed independent hip-hop label, Rhymesayers.

A 10-week boot camp that’s an intense exploration of rap culture and recording production, Hip-Hop Essentials uses song production, lyric writing and the history of B-boy culture, graffiti, break dancing, urban appeal and performance to put modern hip-hop culture into perspective.  Under the expertise of artists and staff from the Rhymesayers label, students are able to build, mix and remix their own songs and records.

“Rhymesayers is one of the most respected independent hip-hop labels in the country,” says IPR Program Chair, Music and Entertainment Business, Eric Trelstad.  Kevin Beacham [product manager, Rhymesayers Entertainment] and his crew’s real-world experience in the music and entertainment business will help blur the line between music and media production, and will help to instill how branding and connecting with customers on a global scale is crucial no matter what their career path.”

Each class session will be under the guidance of one of Rhymesayers’ many artists.  These include such local and national sensations as Brother Ali, Siddiq, Plain Ole Bill, Ant and Eyedea.  Artists will help students develop deeper production skills, comprehend the basics of what makes a hip-hop record, and gain a working knowledge of the urban music community.

“Rhymesayers is a company rooted in hands-on training,” explains Beacham.  “The artists as well as the staff have the common attribute of building the Rhymesayers brand by pursuing and immersing ourselves in our passion for music and hip-hop culture. It’s our belief that this is a primary goal shared by the students at IPR.  In the changing climate of the music industry it’s important for aspiring artists to be well-rounded in their knowledge of the business in order to be prepared. We feel that IPR offers a well-balanced experience in the various aspects of the business to help create the success stories of tomorrow.”
