Love’s Labor, Updated Weekly

Light electronica pioneer Gershon Kingsley plays Joe’s Pub (NYC) next week.

All too few potentially interested parties know about David Cotner’s massive, globally comprehensive list of impending shows by adventurous entities in music, video, visual art, film, and related realms. While the Los Angeles-based writer and musician maintains the behemoth in blog form (WordPress in the house!), his weekly emails– complete with links to artists, venues, and general strangeness, as well as relevant birth and death info, announcements, and pretty much anything else Cotner thinks might interest his readers–runs a bit more up to date. For a clearer picture of the monster compendium’s scope, check out the latest edition’s listings, pasted in after the jump.

ENSEMBLE MAE – “Licht is de Machine” (after an idea by Joost Rekveld, composer: Martijn Padding, director: Paul Koek, dramaturgy: Paul Slangen)

“Presented on the airport Valkenburg in Katwijk, promises to be a very exciting programme. Light is the Machine is both a gigantic visual installation as a music theatre performance. In the performance light presents her beauty but also her blinding flipside. The audience is taken on a trip along old utopian worlds, sad dreams and personal desire: sometimes in the form of an intimate concert, at other times in a visual surrounding, in which the audience, technicians, musicians and actors all share the floor. Light is the Machine is the first cultural project on the former Airport Valkenburg, Katwijk, commissioned by Kunstgebouw Zuid-Holland.”

“Holy Modal Rounders…Bound to Lose” (unrated / 87 minutes / projected from DVD)

“When fiddler Peter Stampfel collided with guitarist Steve Weber during the ‘Great Folk Scare’ of the early sixties in New York, the two musicians formed a powerful bond based on their shared fascination with American roots music and early psychedelia. Dubbing themselves The Holy Modal Rounders, these eccentric outsiders have been playing their unique brand of psychedelic folk for over four decades, barely surviving on the fringes of the music industry while drawing a dedicated following of luminaries and lunatics. From their origins in New York’s Greenwich Village folk scene and their involvement in the Easy Rider soundtrack, to the lost years of constant drugging, endless touring and a final shot at redemption, “The Holy Modal Rounders… Bound To Lose” recounts the unique forty-year history of these true American originals. With startling intimacy, the film also documents the band’s arduous, amusing, and sometimes heartbreaking struggle to capitalize on their recent resurgence in popularity, culminating in an unpredictable 40th anniversary concert in Portland, Oregon. More than just a chronicle of an obscure band, “The Holy Modal Rounders… Bound To Lose” is a raucous celebration of a lost Americanoutlaw subculture as it draws its final rebellious breaths.”

LOUISE BOURGEOIS – retrospective

“This comprehensive exhibition is the first major survey of American artist Louise Bourgeois (b. 1911, Paris, France) work in more than a decade. Bourgeois’s long and distinguished career reveals a vast oeuvre in dialogue with most of the major international avant-garde artistic movements of the 20th century – from surrealism to conceptual art – but always remaining distinctively separate, as an inventive frontrunner. Simultaneously engaging both modern and traditional techniques, Bourgeois explores various themes in a range of styles, from abstraction to the ready-made. With over 100 works spanning her career, the exhibition includes her earliest paintings; sculptures in differing materials; large-scale installation works from the 1980s and ‘90s; a selection of drawings and prints; small-scale hand-made objects; and her most recent works, which utilize fabric. A rare opportunity to see many of Bourgeois’ most well-known pieces reunited, the presentation includes Filette (1968), The Blind Leading the Blind (1947-49), and a number of her powerful “Cell” installations, such as Red Room (Parents) (1994) and Red Room (Child) (1994).”

MONIEK DARGE – “Muziekdozen / Music Boxes”

“Moniek Darge’s collection of music boxes tell a poetical audiovisual story, hold tiny sounds, subtle reflections, humour and a little bit of liberating kitsch. She frequently explores flea markets with the purpose of discovering interesting boxes and elements. During the visual design of “Muziekdozen” (Dutch for music boxes), fascinating sounds slowly fill up her ears. The result consists of unique creations in which listeners can imagine an exciting audiovisual universe.”

“The Headphones Show” (curated by Alan Licht)

“Headphones have become a fact of the urban landscape – the Walkman, Discman, and now iPods have made headphones a ubiquitous presence in the culture of commuters. Headphones are the closest one can come to experiencing sound in the same way as reading silently to oneself. They provide an alternative, handpicked, and disjunctive soundtrack to one’s surroundings. They also block out the sounds of the immediate environment, while keeping the music inaudible to others, preventing listeners and their cohabitants from being disturbed. In this way headphones have come to symbolize isolation as an increasingly common attribute of life in the digital world. “The Headphones Show” brings together recent art works that require headphones to be experienced, acknowledging the rise of sound as an element in visual art, as well as a medium in itself. The works in the show explore shared experience versus private experience, using headphones to signify the daily reconciliations of interior and exterior worlds in everyday life.”

FELIX THORN – “Felix’s Machines”

“‘Felix’s Machines’ are a series of extraordinary mechanical instruments put together by the artist and musician Felix Thorn in his South London bedroom. The project, which began in 2006, is continuously evolving and will do so throughout and after its time at Gasworks. During the exhibition, musicians and producers will respond to ‘Felix’s Machines’ in a series of events exploring its musical potential. When connected to a computer, ‘Felix’s Machines’ translate Thorn’s compositions into mechanical actions performed by customised drums and piano parts and animated by solenoids, springs and motors. In this way, an electronic means of production is transposed into an acoustic output. Each element of the machine has its own light emitting diode (LED). In the darkened space of the gallery, this creates an arrangement of coloured projections illuminating the sound source and synchronised with the music.”

“Transcentric: Across, Beyond, Between and Within” (exhbition)

“TRANSCENTRIC is a collection of works across a range of media by artists associated with RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia and the University of the Arts London. The works in the exhibition move across, beyond, between, and within city centres. As such they are concerned with phenomena that we might think of as ‘urban’, however this is interpreted not only in terms of spatial relationship, but also considers how the urban centre resonates with overlapping themes arising from social, environmental, geographical, political and other forces. Many of the works are concerned with the particularities of the aesthetics of writing and re-writing urban space, while others reflect on associations emanating from and within the centre such as the symbolism of architecture, the structures of belief systems, mortality in the modern world, the relationship of the centre to the periphery, the spaces in-between, and the weather.”

DAVID TIBET – recent works on paper inspired by Apocryphal, Gnostic and Hallucinatory scriptures

“For “INVOCATION OF HALLUCINATORY MOUNTAlN (Some Gnostic Cartoons)”, David Tibet will install a beguiling cycle of recent works on paper that have sprung from his intense study of scriptural and apocryphal Gnostic and Christian texts in the Coptic language as well as from his joyous exploration of the Canon of Apocalyptic Cartoons. David Tibet’s visionary drawings are those of the artist as scribe illuminating the contours and spaces of our shared spirit worlds. Tibet’s work is profoundly magical in intention and it portrays and describes the dimensions of hallucinatory bodies and their worlds, where writing and image are both fluid and entwined. His drawings are child-like, playful and comical, as he continues his colouring in of the universes. In these spaces the hierarchy of human, animal and spirit forms is dissolved: masks dream of planets and grin at moons. The imaginative world that Tibet gives form to is one in which writing and speech are divine, full of promises and threats. This investigation of word and form is rooted in his studies of the Coptic language, as well as in readings of ecstatic canonical and non-canonical Christian texts. However, these ideas are filtered through a uniquely English sensibility that places him in the tradition of such diverse figures as Enid Blyton, Aleister Crowley and Louis Wain. His idiosyncratic and passionate work shines an inmost light on the pleasures and horrors of the divine comedy that we all inhabit. 93 paintings were made by David for the “INVOCATION OF HALLUCINATORY MOUNTAlN (Some Gnostic Cartoons)” show, of which 39 will be exhibited.”

“Since the release of his seminal film WAVELENGTH in 1967, Michael Snow is a familiar name to anyone with an interest in experimental cinema. To highlight the close connection between Snow’s practice as a filmmaker and as an artist, the gallery at BFI Southbank presents YES SNOW SHOW, an exhibition of his recent digital works, accompanied by a season of his key films. This is a unique opportunity to see some of his recent art works alongside rarely screened titles and hear the artist talk in depth about his practice.”
