Relocating to the Twin Cities
This resource will provide you with basic information about different housing options in Minneapolis. While these are not the only places to live in the city, they are places that IPR feels comfortable recommending to its students. We have visited the buildings, made sure they are clean and have controlled entrances, and established relationships with the management. These buildings also have easy bus access, are located in the Minneapolis area near our campus, and most include the basic utilities of heat, water, sewer and trash.
While we do recommend these buildings, we can make no guarantees. When choosing any apartment, whether in our group of referrals or not, please be sure to make a thorough investigation of the building and management before making your decision. Information we provide may not always be completely up-to-date or accurate. Some apartment buildings may have amenities or floor plans that aren’t advertised, and rental rates tend to fluctuate. Also, be sure to ask about move-in specials when you call to check availabilities.
There are a few important items to keep in mind as you search for a place to call home in the Twin Cities. The first is parking. Having a vehicle in the city can be very expensive. Not only do you usually have to pay a monthly fee to park at your apartment, you will also have to pay to park in lots and ramps downtown. This includes driving to school, as IPR does not have a student lot. There is a section in this document that details some of the parking options in the area. The public transportation in Minneapolis is very good, so it’s completely possible to get wherever you need to go whenever you need to be there with the bus, light rail, and maybe a bicycle. Please explore your options and take a close look at your budget if you’re considering moving to Minneapolis with a vehicle.
Moving to a student housing community can be a great transition for students who don’t have much experience out on their own. They have many of the benefits of independent living but allow students to be amongst their peers. They have great amenities such as computer labs, game rooms, and fitness centers. They also include high-speed internet access and cable television in the rent and have washers and dryers in the units – both great money savers! One of the biggest benefits of student housing communities is that they have individual leases – meaning you sign a lease that is solely between yourself and the management company. You will therefore not be affected if a roommate fails to pay rent. Check out the details of some excellent student housing communities included in our list of referrals.
Following our apartment referrals, there is also a list of additional housing resources. Please use them and remember that the Student Services Department is here to help you. If you have been in contact with one of our representatives for assistance in your search, keep them updated! We can’t help you if we don’t know about your progress. We sometimes hear about special deals or subleases that may interest you, so be sure we have your best contact number and email so we can pass that info along. Also, let us know when you’ve found your new home. It’s really helpful for us to know where our students are living and how they like it.
Here is a basic timeline to follow for your housing search:
3 – 5 months before start: Familiarize yourself with the different areas of Minneapolis and decide what you think would be a good fit for you. We offer information on the several neighborhoods represented in our list of referrals. Take a look at the options in this resource, and peruse the internet as well. Pick 3 or 4 places that you really like, and give them a call to request specific information.
2 – 3 months before start: Almost all apartment buildings do not know their availabilities prior to 60 days in advance, so at this point they can inform you of openings they have. Call your 3 or 4 choices and ask them what they have available for your desired move-in date. If they have an opening, schedule an appointment to come take a look around and meet the management. On your visit, be prepared to put down a security deposit and have someone to co-sign for you if necessary.
We understand that due to the distance some people are coming from, it is not always possible to return for a second visit. In that event, you can carry out the leasing process by email and fax, just contact the management to work out the details and ask that the appropriate paperwork be sent to you. Renting an apartment without actually seeing it may not feel completely comfortable for you, which is one of the reasons we put this resource together with such comprehensive information. These are places where IPR students have lived or are currently living and have had positive experiences. 1 month before start: Take care of any remaining details, sit back, and relax until your start date!
